What to Expect in Your First Session

Starting therapy can feel both hopeful and a little uncertain — and that’s completely normal. Your first counseling session is all about creating a comfortable, safe space where you can begin sharing your story at your own pace.

Here’s what typically happens during your initial visit.

Remember, there’s no “right” or “wrong” way to start therapy. Your first session is simply the beginning of a journey tailored to your unique needs, guided by compassion and respect.

  • Your counselor will take time to get to know you, explain confidentiality and therapy policies, and answer any questions you have about the process.

  • You’ll have the opportunity to talk about what brought you to counseling, your current challenges, and what you hope to achieve. There’s no pressure to share everything at once — this is your time.

  • To understand your needs better, your therapist may ask about your personal history, mental health background, lifestyle, and support system. This helps tailor your treatment plan.

  • Therapy works best when it’s collaborative. Your counselor will help you identify clear, meaningful goals that you want to work toward during your sessions.

  • You’ll go over scheduling, session length, fees or insurance details, and how to contact your counselor between appointments if needed.

  •  Feel free to ask about the therapy approach, confidentiality limits, or anything else on your mind.

A Gentle Note for Your First Visit

It’s completely natural to feel nervous or unsure about starting counseling. Remember, you don’t have to have all the answers or know exactly what to say—your counselor is here to listen, support, and guide you without judgment.

Therapy is a personal journey, and it moves at your pace. It’s okay to take small steps and share only what feels comfortable. Every story is important, and simply showing up is a powerful act of self-care and courage.

You are not alone, and you deserve support that honors your experience and helps you find peace, strength, and hope.

We’re honored to walk alongside you.
